This training is provided by Fraser Health Authority for residents ages 18 to 27 of British Columbia, Canada in the Fraser Health region (Burnaby to Boston Bar)
What is Youth Peer Support Training?
This training is provided by Fraser Health Authority for residents ages 18 to 27 of British Columbia, Canada in the Fraser Health region (Burnaby to Boston Bar) with lived experience of a mental health and/or substance use challenge who have 6 months reasonable wellness, a strong support network, and a desire to support others. Applicants must able to attend in person practicums within the Fraser Health Authority Region. The training focuses on the role of Peer Support Workers with the Fraser Health Authority.
Who is it for?
Criteria for applying:
Youth/Young adults between the ages of 18-27 who:
Have lived/living experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges
Have a minimum of 6 months reasonable wellness, a personal wellness plan, and a support
network so they can take on the responsibilities of supporting youth
Are open to sharing aspects of lived experience with service providers, young people, and
families
Have a passion for developing new relationships and spending time with youth and young adults
Have good communication and time management skills
Have regular access to a computer and check email regularly
Are able and willing to travel in the Fraser Health region
What to expect
The training consists of the following three main components:
A free 10 week in-depth Youth Peer Support Worker (YPSW) training program, delivered in two 3-hour sessions per week. Delivery of the training will be hybrid (in-person and virtual sessions)
Following completion of the training, participants complete a 60 hour practicum placement (5-10 hours per week) and receive two cash honorariums
After completing the training and practicum portion of the program, participants will receive their Certificate of Completion and be offered a 100 hour paid part-time work contract with Fraser to provide Youth Peer Support services for clients who would benefit from social and emotional support from peers who understand what they’re going through!
